The term “subluxation” refers to a minor misalignment, but the impact on the human body, particularly in the upper cervical spine, can be far from minor. In simple terms, a subluxation occurs when one or more vertebrae (the bones in your spine) shift out of alignment and apply pressure on the spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are the pathways that extend from the vertebrae in your spine, and pressure on these nerves can interfere with the signals passing through them, leading to a wide range of health issues.

Chiropractors typically identify five key components of the Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC).

  • Spinal Kinesiopathology – This occurs when the spine’s bones become stuck, fail to move sufficiently, or move excessively.
  • Neuropathophysiology (abnormal nervous system function) – Nerves may become overstimulated and overly active. Due to the spine’s design, abnormal spinal function can irritate, compress, or stress the delicate tissue of the spinal cord and nerve roots.
  • Myopathology (abnormal muscle function) – This happens when overdeveloped muscles on one side of the spine cause individual vertebrae to rotate and lose proper function. As muscle function diminishes, the muscles supporting the spine react in various ways, potentially weakening or even causing the spine to atrophy.
  • Histiopathology (abnormal soft tissue function) – Inflammation and swelling due to a damaged disc are accompanied by blood and lymph accumulation, leading to a rise in temperature.
  • Pathophysiology – Following trauma to a joint, your body attempts to stabilize the area by forming new bone. Over time, calcium deposits accumulate, forming abnormal bony growths. This arthritic ‘splinting’ of bones is the body’s way of stabilizing the injured joint.

Given the complexities of the nervous system, ongoing research is exploring the roles of hormones, aging, immune system responses, and even genetic factors. The Vertebral Subluxation Complex may be one of the most common, yet often overlooked, sources of health problems.
