Proper spinal alignment is crucial for maintaining a healthy, pain-free life. When a joint experiences trauma, one of the body’s responses is to stabilize the affected area by forming new bone. Over time, calcium deposits accumulate, eventually forming abnormal bony growths. This arthritic ‘splinting’ of bones is the body’s natural attempt to stabilize the injured joint. If left untreated, subluxation progresses into a condition known as ‘subluxation degeneration,’ which can lead to chronic health issues.

As demonstrated by these x-rays, progressive degeneration can be stopped or slowed down with appropriate chiropractic care.

NORMAL
Healthy spinal curves allow for normal turning and bending. The spaces between joints are open, allowing nerve roots to exit the spine without obstruction. The edges of the bones are smooth and clearly defined. Equal spacing between the discs indicates proper spinal function.

PHASE ONE
The loss of normal curves and misalignment restricts or exaggerates normal movement ranges. Ligament and muscle strength decrease. Even though nerve irritation and soft tissue inflammation may be present, pain or other noticeable symptoms might not appear.

PHASE TWO
After years of calcium buildup, bone spurs begin to form in an attempt to fuse the malfunctioning joints. The surfaces of the joints become rough and uneven. Joint instability persists, along with continued nerve irritation and disc degeneration.

PHASE THREE
After years of neglect, complete fusion occurs, immobilizing the joint. Nerve openings are obstructed, causing permanent nerve irritation as soft tissue degeneration continues. This irreversible stage is often linked to other chronic health problems.
